Project: Flat EL
Date: January 2004 - March 2004
Summary:
I've been wanting to cover myself with glowing electronics for nearly two years
now. I've found flat EL to be the most practical at this point. Its flexible,
it looks great, and its not too expensive. I can probably cover my whole body
with glow aqua paper for about $400 (US). I can likely sequence it in so many
ways and drive it so bright that all traffic will stop. Thats my goal. Stop
all traffic.I've come up with a velcro concept for adhering the EL (Electro
Luminescent) flat pieces to myself.
I ended up not doing the full body suit I had envisioned, but I did come up
with a green jacket with a clever phrase that I believe I made up on my own.
The jacket says "Technology will save us". There are three strips
of Flat-EL with a stock 3-channel lytec sequencer. I know I should make my own
since its trivial, but I didn't feeling like making another sequencer (it would
be my 3rd). This suit is special because:
- The Flat-El and Sequencer can easily be detached
- The Jacket is washable
- The Flat-EL has transparency paper above it that I print text on
- Conductive thread is used for the bulk of the wiring
- There was a lot more sewing than soldering on this project
